Rails and switch
grinding
The railways are our most common means of
communication, both for goods and for public
transports. The vast level of traffic means that the
railways are very exposed to wear. Because of this,
the railways need to be maintained on a regular
basis, to keep safety and comfort intact.
Spark Trade works with four main types of grinding:
•
Maintenance grinding.
Maintenance grinding is implemented on a regular
basis, depending on different factors such as
railway classification and level of traffic. The
grinding is done to control and avoid damage caused
by regular use and wear. This increases the
longevity of the rails, keeps the costs down and
decreases the level of noise and vibrations.
•
Corrective grinding.
Corrective grinding is implemented on rails that are
heavily damaged, and is mainly used to keep the
rails functional for a shorter period of time. This
type of grinding is performed when the railway can’t
be brought back to full standards, or when it’s not
financially possible to fully restore the tracks.
•
Preventive grinding.
Preventive grinding is performed on newly installed
railways, in order to remove oxidised surfaces and
other defects such as welding joints. Preventive
grinding should be performed during the first year
after installation.
•
Special grinding/Asymmetrical grinding.
Special grinding is performed on rails that have a
different profile from regular railways. The work
effort is defined by local conditions and
circumstances, not by general standards. After every
grinding project, the effect and durability of the
work effort is thoroughly measured.
